All the FPS games I can think of are from WWII and later, even going into the future. I was just wondering if anyone has played a game set earlier, like WWI. I think it would be a good time to set a game in. Being mostly trench warfare there is the close range battles within the trenches, and then long range from one to another. I'm pretty sure there were smg's and bolt action rifles then. and even early tanks and airplanes. Are there any good games set in this time? And do you guys think this time would make a good new game?
I would love to see a WWI game some day. I could see the assassin's creed series having a game that takes place in that time frame. You could be stealthy in the enemy trenches while also engaging enemies outside trenches behind the lines. Enemy capitals could be the cities as well. I would love to take some time climbing the Berlin skyline.
What helped make WW2 such a success in the FPS market is this: 1. Sweeping locations across Europe/Asia (most WW2 games did not take place in the Pacific, that was Americas War). 2. The enemy in the European Theater is regarded in history to be a true villain (Rarely do we fight the Italians or other Axis powers other than the Germans). 3. WW2 saw mobile combat, Squad Combat, that had not yet been seen in modern warfare. Trench Warfare, No-man's Land, Armor that moved at a snails pace would make for pretty boring FPS mechanics, and would be better suited for Strategy/RTS gameplay.
To be fair, a WW1 game might not be good as a FPS. Weapons were hella inaccurate and strategy consisted of "sit in a flooded trench" and "charge until you or they are dead". As an RTS or TBS it might work.
